The client
A retail and commercial bank exploring programmable money products.
The challenge
Fixed deposits are popular but rigid: money is locked until maturity, servicing relies on back-office processes, and customers get little visibility between statements. The bank wanted to make deposits more flexible and engaging without leaving the regulated perimeter.
What we built
We designed a solution that turns each fixed-term deposit into a programmable token. When a customer opens a deposit, the bank issues a token carrying the amount, tenure, interest rate and maturity date. Smart contracts handle interest accrual, payouts, renewals and maturity. Within a permissioned network, and under rules the bank sets, customers can redeem early or transfer the token to another eligible customer — adding liquidity to a product that was previously locked.
Main features
- Real-time view of balance, interest earned and maturity dates for depositors
- Optional early redemption and peer-to-peer transfer with bank-defined rules and charges
- Automatic payouts, renewals and ledger updates that remove back-office work
- Roadmap to structured deposits, loyalty-linked rates and deposit tokens used as collateral or to offset loans
Delivery plan
- Weeks 0–2 · Define the product — workshops on tenures, interest models, liquidity rules, redemption and transfer conditions and MVP scope; legal and compliance review of the token structure
- Weeks 3–8 · Configure and integrate — token templates, issuance logic and automation rules; integration with core banking, CRM and customer dashboards; admin, compliance and reporting panels
- Weeks 9–12 · Launch and iterate — pilot with a chosen customer segment, feedback and a plan for wider rollout
How success is measured
Pilot KPIs include deposits opened via tokens, early-redemption and transfer usage, back-office hours saved per deposit and customer satisfaction scores.
